Room For Rent

We were just getting ready to sell our house and my friend Karen ran into an old acquaintance of hers who needed a place to stay. It turned out I knew the girl from 20 years before when we had shared an apartment for a few months. I did not think too highly of her, but being a sucker for someone in trouble who I can help, I let her move in to a room we had outside of our house, but she had to share our kitchen.

While we were signing paperwork on the home sale she went up to my husband, who was not in good health, and sucked on his neck. He looked like a deer in headlights and had no idea what to do. Next, she lost her job and had no money, so of course could not pay the rent. She got nasty with my poor husband, and when I tried to handle her, she went nuts. That’s when I realized I had a complete lunatic on my hands.

Add to that, she took a stray cat into the room and decided it was really good to let the kitty litter get a smelly as possible – it was so bad that even standing in the doorway made me what to throw up. Then she met someone over the phone and had a date with him. Before she went on the date, she mentioned that maybe she’d sleep with him. I tried to advise against having sex with a stranger, but did she listen to me? She got an STD and got dumped.

I had to clean up the stench in the room prior to the sale closing and only got her out 15 minutes before the new buyers took ownership.

Just goes to prove that sometimes no good deed goes unpunished.

Stinks to be in a bad situation, but . . . a) you knew this girl was a bad roommate, b) you and your husband didn’t put an immediate stop to her behavior, c) you let her keep a cat long enough to let the smell build up that badly and didn’t do anything about it. You ought to work on growing more of a backbone and saying “no” when things like this come up.

Oh, and the STD? It sucks, but it doesn’t make her a bad roommate unless she was bringing random guys back to your place at odd hours.
