Frau Blucher, I just have to say it isn’t just women who are so screwed up and needy. I have many stories about needy boys.

These roommates sound awful. I have to say though, I feel sorry for the first roommate. It sounds like it may have been an abusive relationship she just didn’t know how to deal with (or was used to, as is often the case).

The clothing issue with the second roommate just pisses me off. If you are going to brag about helping people, then f*cking help them! If not, then shut your mouth and don’t make the people actually making a difference look bad.

My understanding of the lease issue when I first read it was the the roommate had signed the lease & had two spare rooms in the house & the OP & her friend moved in on an informal basis to help her out with the rent.

Agree with mmaire. Though those roommates sound horrible and I sympathize, but I gotta say–the lease thing is not cool, and makes you guys bad roommates too.
You sign a lease, you have to pay the rent for the duration of that lease. Or it is *your* responsibility to find a suitable subletter for the remainder of the lease.

@tronner – Depends on the state. Mass (where I am) is always the last Wednesday/Thursday of July, so, yep, still studying. I think a bunch of states start tomorrow. And yes, that sort of jumping in is exactly what I’m talking about. I’m trying to refrain for the sake of others. I know non-law people don’t want to be yammered at in legalese until their eyes glaze over. Oh, and thanks for the good luck! Andrew too. =)

OP – the clothes situation with roommate #2 sounded crappy – I love people and their soon-to-be-forgotten pet projects.

@Bridgete – studying? Aren’t most bar exams today? Good luck. And yes, studying for that damn test makes one want to jump in on everything from roommate issues to dog bites to screaming “That’s not what the rules say!” to episodes of Law ‘n Order.

I agree that the OP was responsible for the lease, but what if she had made a verbal agreement with the roommate that she would be leaving the lease early and the MVWR agreed to find another tenant? What if the land lord knew there would be a switch? There are details missing that I will keep from judging since the MVWR was so shitty.

What mmaire said about the lease. Studying for the bar exam makes me want to explain it further, but she (or he?) said enough so I’ll leave it alone. T does sound like a terror though.
